Given that the Ichigo/Orihime PHEARZ DUE TO MOVING IMAGES!! has cropped up again at ichi_ruki--and let me take a moment to salute the mods, who watch these things go up all the time and do not go on known killing sprees--I wanted to bring it up as a specific topic of discussion. It was discussed a little in comments here, but let's open up the floor to the whole comm!

I suppose I should state what we're talking about, then. I'm looking not for a discussion of Ichigo/Orihime v. Rukia/Ichigo (v. Rukia/Orihime!)--this isn't a right and wrong sort of discussion. What I'm thinking, as a driving force behind this post, is looking at how it all relates to plot and character. Which, I guess, is going to turn back into a pairing discussion, but I tried, ne?

Some questions to mull:

-What do you think of the development of Orihime's affections towards Ichigo? Where has the impetus for that development come from?

-How do you think her character has been affected by the authorial decision to invest so much in her feelings? Has there been a positive impact or a negative one on the plot? On the fans' view of Orihime?

-What's the difference between her feelings for Ichigo and her feelings for Tatsuki? Actually, let's just talk Tatsuki in relation to Ichigo and Orihime all together, because MAN this just doesn't come up enough. Orihime has been successfully defended by many people, but has only truly successfully defended one herself: Tatsuki. Talk to me about this.

-KT draws personal connections between Ichigo and Rukia and Orihime in various ways--the tragedies of Volume 3, for instance. What are some other paralllels?

-What's the deal with Rukia and Orihime? What sort of future relationship implications does this have for them and for Ichigo? (PAIN!...I am so biased.)

-IchiOri or IchiHime: what is the difference?

-How does Rukia's relationship with Ichigo differ from Orihime's relationship with Ichigo? Reaaaally broad question, but I'm thinking of terms of the overall plot and the Chapter 0s we got for them both.

-How clueless IS Ichigo?

-Rukia's arc was Soul Society. Orihime's arc is the Hueco Mundo arc. Are there parallels in character growth? What are the differences? What's going on with Ichigo in both of them?

...and I think I'll stop there, 'cause this is ambitious enough as it is.

Time for the yearly post to this comm, or something [
]

jaina
I sort of need a mental break from IchiRuki fandom at large, and this seemed like a good refuge, considering the name and all...so y'all, in the interests of pairing enthusiasm that doesn't boil down to "they're going to smooch and declare true love any second now, just wait for it" can we have...a discussion or something? Perhaps some fannish squee? If you need a topic, here's one: What not typically romantic aspect of their relationship/manga moments/etc etc do you love about our otp of awesome?

I'll start.

Sponsored Fic Critique 3: the untitled time travel fic, part 1, by Merry [
]

hecatehatesthat
This is the secret, self-indulgent fic I've mentioned working on in my journal a couple of times. It's not finished, but I really wanted to try posting a fic no one (or almost no one) has seen before for this Critique, to see how it goes over with you guys and how that affects the feedback rate or whatever.

So this is very much a first draft, which means it needs the shit beaten out of it. (And as it's unfinished, I know you guys will have questions about where it's going, which I will do my best to answer. I know the emotional beats I want to hit and I have some future -- er, later in the story -- scenes half-written, but I'm still working out some of the technical details. Which in no way means you can't ask about those, making me think about them can only help.)

On to the storyCollapse )

And I know a lot of you are working on ichi_ruki contest entries at the moment, which of course you can't post here (not before the contest, anyway), but if anyone has fic they'd be willing to submit for the Sponsored Critique, the next session is open!

A Little Help Here, Please [
]

hecatehatesthat
[ mood | confused ]

You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I should be ashamed of myself too. Not one of us has managed to leave concrit on lacewood's "Excessive Chain" as the latest Sponsored Fic. It's only round 2, people, what happened? I mean, I know why I haven't gotten to it yet, but what about you all?

Seriously – I'm not just here to scold you into giving the girl some damn crit, I want to figure out why it went so well last time and so not at all this time, so we can fix it and make it easier to leave constructive criticism if we can. Was it just that all of you who left feedback on Ten's fic felt you'd done your duty by the comm and could skip this round and leave it to others? Because that's not how it works. You're a member, you're expected to read the Sponsored Fic and think of some way it could be better every time, or at least almost every time.

Is there something I can use to motivate you besides how good this will be for the fandom and for your fellow fans as writers? I don't want to threaten to kick people out if they never participate, but if we can't manage any criticism at all, something's gotta give. I will definitely be adding the rule that if you don't leave concrit, you're not eligible to get it – not that people are beating down the door to be the next Sponsored Fic, but member or not, if you haven't left feedback on either of the two latest Sponsored Fics when your week comes around, you will be skipped in the rotation. Of course, that'll only matter if people are actually leaving comments on the Sponsored Fic. Come on, guys!

So. Fill me in. Why haven't you left feedback for Pei Yi? What it is that held you back this week that didn't happen last time? And if you didn't leave feedback last time either – which is a lot of you – tell me about that, too. Are you just not interested in participating in this aspect of the community? Too busy? Think you suck at feedback? Should I make a post with suggestions on how to beta read or something? What would help you and motivate you to participate?

ETA because apparently when I post in the morning I suck at being sarcastic/playful -- I don't really think any of us should be ashamed, I just want you guys to help me iron out the kinks in the new critique system, because there obviously are kinks. I know some of them have to do with stuff I still have to do myself, but your opinions make a big difference and some of you are gonna have ideas that wouldn't have occurred to me and, you know, all the help I can get.

This is late, so you all have extra reasons to rip me to shreds, coughhack. Anyway. Once more a lamb is brought to the slaughter? I wrote Excessive Chain about a year and a half ago, so I will be honest - I am probably not going to do extensive revisions to this story, though certainly I will consider edits, since I AM here, yes. XD That said, I'm still interested in getting crit on the story because I figure it will be useful in the long run, and I'd like to see what people who aren't my usual betas have to say.

So, have at it. XD

Hello, comm! I come bearing the first fic for mauling by wild dogs critique: "Eyes Turned Inside Out," originally posted last year in ichi_ruki. It was unbetaed there, and it's still essentially unbetaed here--the only person to do any editing is me. Which means, quite frankly, that it's still a mess, and I'm looking forward to any and all comments provided.

Please remember to follow the goshdarn rules/guidelines, though. If you haven't read them before you post, please read; if you have read them, read them again before you comment. As much as I'd taste good barbecued, we want to keep this civil.

Here It Goes! [
]

hecatehatesthat
The results of the poll show that Friday and Saturday are the most popular first and second choice days for the Sponsored Fic Critique, but a few people's responses indicated that they won't have any time at all on the weekends. In order to best accomodate the most people (and hopefully get as much participation as possible), we're going to make Thursday the day that the Sponsored Fic is posted for the critique to begin, and the exclusive focus on this fic will continue through Friday.

Community-wide focus on the Sponsored Fic will be ensured by the prohibition of posting anything else on the day of and the after the posting of the Sponsored Fic. That means anything posted to the community (other than, in some circumstances, new chapter discussion) on every second Thursday and Friday will be deleted by the mods. Starting this week!

Since the dub premieres this Saturday, we want to get the new pattern of action started in this comm before the fandom population explodes and things go crazy. The first fic to be object of community-wide critique will be posted by our brave volunteer, tenebris, this Thursday. (But don't get too excited guys, it won't be new fic -- it'll be one of her older fics, though somewhat updated.) I'll post more detailed rules for the critique on Thursday before she puts her fic up so you all have a better idea what we're going for here.

I'd also like to draw your attention, while I'm here, to: 1. the fact that we have a new mod here, nyonyo, who will bring the awesome, and 2. to the post of the official community standing challenges that's now up.

I'll be posting even more about new the plans to get the awesome rolling in this comm later this week.

It has been brought to my attention (a few times) that I never post my own fic here, and when I realized it's because I'm a little intimidated to do that, I decided the atmosphere of… uh, elitism, I guess… is maybe a little too much. This comm isn't meant to be scary – just snarky and smart.

So! I posted a new chapter of my giant WIP today, and I reckon that at three chapters and 13,000+ words, the thing is long enough to go up here. Apologies to those of you who are gonna be seeing this story turn up on your friends page twice.

Title: When the Sun Comes Up, You Better be Moving
Word Count: 13,661 (total)
Thanks: To my darling betas, tenebris and raynos, for putting up with my crap and only smacking me occasionally.
Spoilers: The timeline goes AU from manga chapter 51 or so, but spoilers through at least 201 will make appearances.
Summary: Someone slept late or didn't file their paperwork properly, so Renji and Byakuya aren't the shinigami sent to retrieve Rukia. With some help from Ishida, Ichigo and Rukia cream the retrieval team and go on the run. Angst and trouble follow them. As of chapter 3, their energy is quickly running out, and so is the money.

Chapter One: The Single Step
Chapter Two: Never Let Your Feet Run Faster Than Your Shoes
Chapter Three: Two if by Sea

Remember this a very concrit-friendly community! Feel free to let me have it on any and all of these chapters.

Fic Pet Peeves List!

(Please remember that I have been compiling this list as I encountered things that bug me, and am thus generally in a state of high frustration when I add things to it.  So the tone is not the nicest.  If you've done some of the things on the list, don't cry -- I've done some of them too.  Probably everyone has.  Sometimes we even do them with good reason.  But please do stop and think about why you did/wrote what you did, and whether you could change it.)
  • Pronoun fear makes Ichigo cry.  For the love of KT, STOP referring to Ichigo as "the orange-haired boy/shinigami," "the redhead," "the flame-haired boy" and all other variations that refer to him by his hair, his age, or his job.  Same goes for Rukia (if I read the phrase "the petite shinigami" one more time someone is gonna die) and everyone else.  Seriously.  STOP IT.  The character's name and the pronouns "he" and "she" exist for a reason.  Use them!
  • Never post fic that hasn't been beta read.  And if your beta says it's perfect?  You need a new beta.
  • Orihime is an airhead, not an idiot – yes, there is a difference.
  • If your Rukia is crying, she better have a REALLY DAMN GOOD REASON.  Which means it probably involves death.  If your ICHIGO is crying, he better be nine years old and holding his mother's dead body on his lap.
  • Rukia. Chose. To. Stay. In. Soul Society. Of her own. Free. Will.  She did not regret it and she did not spend her time there pining for Ichigo.  Get over it.
  • Related: Rukia is not going to just give up living in Soul Society and become Ichigo's happy housewife, kthxbai.
  • Ichigo's sexual experience is ZERO and he is certainly not going to be the aggressor with Rukia.  Remember boobfear?  The boy embarrasses easily.  Coax him.
  • From the beginning of the Soul Society arc – around when Byakuya pwns Ichigo and takes Rukia – onward, Ichigo is 16, not 15.  I know we all love the pun, KT included, but birthdays happen, and the pun is technically one-five, not fifteen, anyway.
  • Symbolism is only symbolism when it's subtle.  When it's the only thing in your fic it's what we call an anvil and it's just annoying.
  • Corollary: incomprehensibility does not make your fic le artistique or poetic or whatever you think it is – it makes it pretentious and impossible to read. (Get a beta!  SERIOUSLY.)
  • Please, please read your fic out loud.  If you are stumbling over your sentences?  So am I.  They sound weird.  Make them simpler.
  • Your imagery is cliché and overdone.  No, really, it is.  The black butterfly?  Uh-huh.  BORED NOW.
  • No seriously, Rukia is not a beautiful butterfly.
  • ministration: (chiefly formal or humorous): 1. The provision of assistance or care; the kitchen made spotless by the ministrations of a cleaning lady. 2.  The services of a minister of religion or of a religious institution.  i.e. THIS IS NOT A SEXY WORD.  STOP USING IT IN YOUR SMUT.
  • bemused =/= amused; bemused = confused
  • "in lieu" means in place of, not in light of
  • you do not look in askance, you just look askance, okay?  It's not an emotion, it's an expression, and it's only sort of that – it's a skeptical, scandalized, sideways sort of look.
Feel free disagree  (or agree!) with me about some of these items -- and to say so!  I'd love to discuss fic and fanon and writing in general.  And of course, if you have a pet peeve of your own that I missed, comment with it!

Recs Post! (finally) [
]

hecatehatesthat
[ mood | accomplished ]

Jeez, putting together a recs post is so much more work that I had anticipated. This list covers my own favorite Ichigo/Rukia fic pretty well, but it is by no means exhaustive. If there's something you think is missing, please, share it in the comments. And if you have reservations about any of the fic on here, feel free to explain why, too. We want this comm to be criticism-friendly. Keep us all on our toes.

So, in no particular order, these are the Ichigo/Rukia fics that make me proud of the fandom:

by hallowd
Holes in the Rain -- One of the many insomnia fics that ichiruki lends itself to, or did in the days when the couple was sharing a room. Nice, not overdone, some lovely images... plus, subtle mommy angst.

by pinkpuruu
A Christmas Parallel -- Has the problem all Christmas fics have, which is that Rukia wasn't in the human world during the winter (although now it's fall in canon, so I guess if she sticks around one could assume these fics are post-Soul Society arc), but Ichigo and Rukia are wonderfully snarky and yet adorable.

4:00 AM -- More insomnia fic. This one has a neat twist, though. And I wish the author would write a sequel with the awkward hijinks that have GOT to occur the next morning! But that might just be because I enjoy Ichigo being freaked out a little too much.

I Want to Save You -- Ichigo training during the Soul Society arc and remembering one of those little unimportant moments from when Rukia was in the human world. I love fic where she doesn't understand human things (the Anya Factor) and this is one of those.

by kaitou_magician
Waiting for Shambala -- One of the few realistic Rukia-goes-the-human-world-to-stay post-Soul Society fics I've read. It actually deals with a plausible (and therefore, kind of depressing) reason for her to return and stay, and the consequences of living in the human world that aren't all fun shippy hijinks. Rukia in this fic reminds me very much of Anya in "Selfless." This is a very good thing.

by lacewood
Excessive Chain -- Pretty much the only other Rukia-stays-in-the-human-world post-Soul Society story I know of that deals with the issues realistically. Even more depressing than Waiting for Shambala, but in a good way. It hurts and you want more.

Razors -- Short first-kiss fic featuring superior-in-her-ignorance-of-human-ways Rukia and a very embarrassed Ichigo. Just the way it should be.

Rabbit Food -- The only fic combining Rukia and bunnies I've been able to stand, for good reason. Rukia is a very practical person.

by tokyofish
Sitting in a Tree -- My favorite of "The Other Side of Ordinary" 'verse, one of those futures where Rukia's living in the human world and openly in a relationship with Ichigo... only good. Full of snark and crazy Rukia-logic, plus plenty of the rest of the Kurosaki clan. I'm always uneasy with the concept of Rukia just up and staying in the human world, but this is one fic I'm willing to overlook that for.

Imitation of Life -- Another one where Rukia stays in the human world; not as lighthearted as Sitting in a Tree, but not as melancholy as Waiting for Shambala or Excessive Chain, either. Done in a contemplative style that feels a little like a fairy tale retelling.

Like Hamlet -- There is just not enough fic that makes use of Ichigo's love of Shakespeare. Seriously.

Keep Reading -- 100 word drabble, featuring more lit geek!Ichigo. Not Shakespeare this time, but still so very right.

by lit_chick
Human -- Nice, awkward first-time sex. Uh, but not porny. Occurs really early in the series, which kind of makes the mind boggle if you think about it too hard, but it makes sense when you read it.

by bravecows
A Debt Unpaid -- post-213, Ichigo makes Rukia promise to kill him. It's kind of amazing how neatly this (the fic, not my lame summary) captures their dynamic.

by suzukiblu
Butterfly of Death -- One of the first non-sucky Ichigo/Rukia fics I ever read. It's very short, and angsty, but somehow the pretty hits me harder than the angst. [Warning: link goes to the Pit of Voles]

by goldberry
Personal Buddha -- Normally I find Berry's fic a little too romantic to fit my images of Ichigo and Rukia, but this one is from Hanatarou's perspective, so it makes sense that they'd be a little off. And I'm a whore for the kind of fic that looks at the main story/heroes from the perspective of minor characters. [another ff.net link]

by peroxide_fic
Proposition -- I think Celeste is generally overrated in this fandom, but I can't resist reccing this one fic. In which Ichigo proposes marriage. SHUT UP. I swear it isn't sappy. The narration has some spontaneously shifting POV issues and a couple of sentences I have to edit in my head to be able to read, but the dialogue is awkward and snarky and right and there's kicking and I love the ending. [this is my last link to that hellhole, I swear]

by tenebris
Ten's "Eyes" series is practically epic now; it features some yummy, fucked-up, well-developed Anti-Ichi and his wonderfully twisted interactions with Rukia and then with Ichigo as well. The imagery inside Ichigo's head is lovely and amusing and causes some very complicated fallout that forces more that a few characters to deal with some issues they've been avoiding, and it all builds up to the only really earned, in-character, fittingly awkward first-time smut I've read for this pairing. There are at least a couple more stories in this 'verse to come, but here are the stories so far:
1. Eyes Turned Inside Out
2. Eyes Closed
3. Close Your Eyes, Maybe He Won't See It
4. I Can See with My Eyes Shut
5. Eyes Turned Inside Out (Punchdown Mix)
6. Eyes Open

by team7
The Girl on the Bridge -- That girl, not that bridge. Alternate Soul Society reunion, very short and a wonderful combination of grumpy Ichigo-brain and lovely imagery.

Scholars and Gentlemen -- Ichigo Vs. Byakuya, lit geek deathmatch. So beyond brilliant. The things Ichigo goes through for Rukia...

by memlu
Bunny Prints -- All the use Rukia has for textbooks. Crappy art, snarky dialogue, friendship and the word "cantankerous." Awesome.

by pitofthesloth
Heavy Breathing -- Ichigo takes Rukia jogging. People notice her fine, fine legs. Not enough fic (outside of sappy crap) gives Rukia the credit she deserves for her hotness. And Ichigo is wonderfully underhanded about helping her.

ModFic
by autophanous
Eree has about a million and a half drabbles that are all awesome; these are a few of my favorites.

Too Proud to Tell You -- Rukia near the end of the (first) Memories in the Rain arc. Short and smart.

VCR, TV, and Other Such Confusing Acronymns -- I think by now we all know how I feel about fic that features Rukia encountering new things in the human world and applying her own logic to them. Ichigo getting all frustrated is just a bonus.

Strange, This World -- Yet another ficlet about Rukia and strange human stuff, but this one manages to take what could be a simply wacky scenario and make it a really poignant depiction of Rukia's alienation. So well done.

Contradiction in Terms -- Just. I love this one. It's so simple and so packed with meaning, in the way Rukia is conflicted and the way Ichigo tries to handle it and yes.

Can You Hear Me Now? -- Before we found out what Ukitake gave Ichigo in 181, everyone speculated it was a cell phone. Eree followed this to its logical conclusion. Fucking awesome crack.

by hecatehatesthat
(I am not above reccing myself but I did ask my co-mod to write the little blurb-things for me, so I take no responsibility for any false advertising here. Complain to Eree.)

Mistletoeing -- A suckerpunch of awesome to all the people who insist on writing schmoopy Christmasfic. I can see Rukia doing this in canon, too.

The Hunt for Tact in its Natural Habitat -- This fic takes two concepts that could go horribly wrong (Rukia in the human world and menstruation) and turns them into a complete riot. Orihime's characterisation will end up destroying your perceptions of your period forever. Also, bonus Karin and Yuzu!

In the Name of the Moon -- I love this: backstory to just how Rukia got up on the windowsill in 195. It even ties in to Rukia's obsession with shoujo manga. A great story with snarly!Ichigo and Rukia banter, which I'm always a sucker for.

Someone Who Outdrew You and Not a Victory March (co-written with tenebris) -- Orihime fic and Ichigo/Rukia that remains squeeable without veering into OOC territory. This is the side of 213 we don't get to see. If your heart doesn't break for Orihime here, well, you don't have one.

Aaaaaand I'm spent.

PS -- I updated the first community post with some guidelines, so if you're thinking about posting something here but aren't sure what belongs, have a look.

Yesterday was an emotional roller-coaster for me from the minute the raw came out, and though there were other factors, about 3/4 of the ups and downs were because of Bleach. (The scanlation is up at Bleach7 now, but the part of the chapter I plan to talk about isn't talky anyway.)

There were a lot of things in the chapter to be blindingly excited about, and a lot to be saddened by. I'm only planning to take on one of each of those things, and I bet you already know which ones.

I couldn't resist reading the chapter thread at ichi_ruki and boy was that a mistake.

Let the Sane 'Shipping Begin [
]

hecatehatesthat
[ mood | accomplished ]

To get this community rolling (finally) I thought I'd open with a post about why I love the Ichigo/Rukia relationship. (Although I'm editing the opening test post with some rules and guidelines and stuff, so I guess that will technically be the opener and you should check it sometime in the next day or two. This post will be to get the discussion going. I hope.) And to keep it simple (and canon-loving), I'm doing it using chapter 199, which probably is not the chapter that springs to anyone's mind when they think of the great chapters for the ship, but to me, this one is iconic. Ichigo and Rukia are in all of four panels, counting flashbacks, but those four panels -- plus certain statements by Orihime -- embody much (though not, of course, quite all) of what I love about the good ship IchiRuki.

We open the chapter with Rukia's overdone shoujo act, and Ichigo's horror of same.

bring on the big images and the analysis!Collapse )

And keep an eye out for a big ol' recs post in the near future.

From the start of my big epic multichapter murder mystery. One of the IchiRuki bits (it's got a lot of pairings...). Also kind of RenRuki if you squint, but what the hey. I am all for constructive criticism, since I've never really tried to write Rukia before and she is very tricky.

Welcome to sane_ichiruki! This community was created, first and foremost, as a place to rant about fandom. Because sometimes the ichiruki fangirls drive us crazy. When you need to curse the stupid in Bleach fandom in general or IchiRuki fandom in particular, or hell, maybe it's the general atmosphere of misogyny in anime fandom that's bugging you -- whatever it is, bring it here.

That said, this is not a place for wank; keep your sense of humor and your brain with you at all times, and remember, in the eyes of society at large, we're ALL crazy.

But there's crazy and there's CARAZY.

We're privileging smart!crazy here -- obsessively analytical!crazy, characterization-fixated!crazy, meta-textual!crazy, all that good stuff.

If you've written or read a great, thoughtful post about a recent chapter of Bleach that relates to Ichigo and/or Rukia, post it or link to it here. Just read an amazing fic? Post a rec here.

Post your own fic here when you're looking for feedback that goes further than "omg so cute!" Actually, if "cute" is a good adjective for your Ichigo/Rukia fic, think hard about how that happened before you post it in this comm. But if you want discussion about your characterization, about plot, about language -- this should be the place for it.

And when you read fic here? Please, please leave feedback, and try to tell the author at least one concrete thing you liked about the story -- or if you didn't like it? Share what bothered you about it.

When you want to talk about KT's characterization, or the ways you think people mess it up in fic -- post it here.

Noticed an allusion in Bleach that has Ichigo/Rukia related consequences? Saw something interesting in the framing? Just want to fangirl but without all the idiocy and grammatically nonsensical sentences and people wishing Bleach would suddenly become a shoujo manga? This is the place for it.

Fanart and icons (which are, er, also a form of fanart...) are welcome as well, provided, of course, that the poster is open to crit. 'Cause that's what we do here.

And have fun!
